Keynote Talk

NSFNET – The Beginning of the Open Internet

This talk will briefly review the early history of computer networking and the Internet and will outline the background to the creation of the NSFNET Programme. The focus will be on the policy and implementation decisions made in 1985 that ensured that the NSFNET was an open internet available to all US academic researchers, and in due course to the world.
